The Church of Abandoned Faith

I was near the corner of Florence & Normandie in South Central Los Angeles, the place where the 1992 L.A. Riots began. I explored a HUGE abandoned church built in 1914, for nearly 3 hours. It was very interesting, but sad at the same time. Nothing is sacred.

Join me as I scout out some abandoned places in Kentucky, all of which have something to do with Whiskey. This stop was at the Louisville Cooperage in Louisville Kentucky.

On entering there were strong warnings of the toxins that remained in the water and soil so I figured it was a good thing I wore my shoes. Of all the abandoned places in Kentucky I explored the Louisville Cooperage was one of the largest. Here was one main structure that still contained much of the old equipment which I found very interesting. There was also a boat and a lot of cool spray paint. Other than that it was warehouse space that occupied most of the land, but still a very cool explore.

My project BARE USA is a nation wide photography project that contrast natural beauty with man-made decay. This contrast is achieved by photographing nude models in abandoned locations.

10. Virginia City & Nevada City in Montana
Virginia city and Nevada city are about a mile apart from each other, along the Alder Gulch in Montana. They are at the site of one of the most valuable deposits of gold that have been located in the Rocky mountains, with an estimated one hundred million dollars worth having been found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In the first three years alone, about thirty million dollars worth of gold was recovered, which made the two cities popular places for gold seekers.
When the gold ran out, however, people left- and there was only enough wealth to just about keep Virginia City running, with no chance of upgrading the infrastructure. Today, it is still the way it was then. A ghost town, a frozen reminder of the Old West. In a turnaround of fortune, it’s now a popular tourist destination where you can go to experience the thrill of the gold rush, albeit without any gold, for yourself.

9. Bodie, California
The Californian gold rush between 1877 and 1888 spawned its own series of towns full of gold seekers, with one of the largest being Bodie, in the eastern Sierra. In its heyday the town was home to more than 10,000 people; all reliant on the nearby treasures of which more than thirty five million dollars worth of gold and silver were found.
Of course, as happened with many places like this, when the gold became scarce the people began to move in search elsewhere. This soon left Bodie as an abandoned town, one that has been kept in a state of “arrested decay” for visitors to explore. The 170 wooden buildings haven’t been touched since they were abandoned, with bottles and desks still sat where they were left in the schoolhouse, saloon, church and barbershop.

8. Kennecott, Alaska
In 1900, copper had become a valuable commodity for the use in wiring as electricity became popular. Two prospectors found an area with the richest concentration of copper that had ever been found; the only problem being it was on a glacier in Alaska. Wealthy investors were brought in who provided the machinery and a railroad track and built a town called Kennecott. All they needed to do was hire a workforce, which they had to offer far higher salaries to, to make the job appealing.
By 1938, however, the mines had run dry. They were shut, along with the railroad, and Kennecott soon became a ghost town. It was later sold into private ownership, and then purchased by the park service in 1998, who have turned it into a National Historic landmark, and one of the most popular destinations in Alaska.

7. South Pass City, Wyoming
As a small gold rush town, South Pass city may seem no different to the others, but it was the site of two important historic events while the gold seekers were in town.
The city was founded in 1867 after Mormon prospectors found gold in the nearby Wind River mountains. Within a year more than 250 buildings had been built, with over 1,000 residents moving in. The half mile long main street featured hotels, restaurants, a bowling alley and dozens of saloons, but the success wasn’t to last long. After growing to around 3,000 inhabitants in 1868, the numbers began to dwindle by 1869 due to the small quantity of gold being found, and by 1872 there were only a few hundred people left.
During this successful time for the city, it also became the first place, in 1869, to introduce a women’s suffrage bill, which led to Wyoming being the first state where women could vote. Soon after that, Esther Hobart, a resident of the city, became the first woman in the country to hold a position in public office when she was appointed as the justice of the peace.
Despite all of this, South Pass city would eventually become a ghost town, with the last few people leaving for good in 1949. In 1966 it was bought from private landowners by the state of Wyoming as a present to its residents, and now is run as a tourist attraction.

Sneak Preview | Urban Exploring with Freaktography Abandoned Power Plant

This Abandoned New York Power plant was built in the late 1940’s when the during a time when the hunger for electricity was rapidly increasing. The original design consisted of two boilers providing steam to a single turbine unit.

A few short years later two additional boilers were added to power a second turbine giving the plant a total output of 70MW. In the late 1980’s there was talks of converting the plat from coal burning into garbage burning however with a 50 million dollar price tag, it didn’t make it passed the planning stage.

By 2000 area residents were complaining about the increasing emissions from the plant. The plant owners blamed the increased emissions on high levels of sulfur in the coal & a state inspector was sent out & determined that the emissions violated federal standards.

Today the plant sits slowly decaying without a shred of hope of ever being powered back up again.

Abandoned Detroit East Grand Methodist Church

The now abandoned Detroit East Grand Methodist Church was founded in the 1888, when the land was farmland. For 12 years the church moved from one location to another, “…and four times was obliged to take quarters either adjoining to or above a saloon, where the tinkle of the slot piano mingled with doxology,” according to the Detroit Free Press newspaper in 1908.

In 1899, the church moved to a new location, building a wood frame chapel in 1900. The congregation grew to 149 in 1904, and in 1907, Reverend Charles Ryerson was assigned to lead the church, no longer a mission. His first goal was the construction of a new church on land that had been bought a few blocks away. On one Sunday alone, he raised $10,000 towards the construction of the church.

The cornerstone was laid down in a ceremony June 27th, 1908, attended by leaders of other Methodist Churches from across the city. Made of red paving brick with gray stone trimmings, the sanctuary seated 750, with a gym in the basement serving as a community center. Construction had proceeded enough to where services were being held in the unfinished basement by September of 1909.

Reverend Ryerson didn’t stay long at the partially completed church, however, having come to odds with Methodist leadership over the direction his faith was taking. In September of 1909 the congregation of Fisher Church split, with one half supporting Ryerson, and the other half opposing him. His congregation retreated back to the previous location on Bellevue, while accusations about his conduct were made and responded to in the newspapers. Facing banishment to a church in North Dakota, he and 75 supporters withdrew from the Methodist Episcopal church, renaming themselves The People’s Tabernacle. Fisher Methodist continued on under Reverend Samuel Jennings, and the church was formally dedicated in March of 1910.

There is little history of East Grand Boulevard Methodist from the 1940’s on, aside from that the church was dissolved in 1985, and replaced by Second Unity Full Gospel Baptist Church, which left in 2000. The church has been vacant since then.

Strange Creepy Town Near Area 51 – Semi Abandoned Town in Nevada Desert – The REAL Loneliest Road!

Views:1420371|Rating:0.00|View Time:4:28Minutes|Likes:|Dislikes:
I decided to finally take a remote back-road “trick route” I’d always wanted to try bypassing Tonopah on the way up from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada. Wow, what a strange trip! A little single lane road in the middle of nowhere complete with a bizarre, sort of spooky and creepy (in a way), semi-ghost town! One of the oddest abandoned places we’ve seen in our years of desert travel. In over 2 hours of driving we saw not ONE other car…nor a single human being. Even when driving through the little town itself. Abandoned cars, trucks..even abandoned soda machines! But not a soul did we see! Haha..I thought being so close to area 51…maybe the aliens abducted everyone! Looks kinda like Fallout New Vegas or Nuketown. a scene straight from GTA! This is why we LOVE Nevada!! No place like it on Earth! ~Kenneth King Bear

ABANDONED Places in Arizona – Master Planned Community

Views:98525|Rating:4.62|View Time:8:10Minutes|Likes:922|Dislikes:75
We visited an abandoned master planned community in Arizona, this place has been abandoned since the housing crisis of 2008.

The Mohave County APPROVED the Silverado Ranch Master Planned Community in 2006. The developers had purchased
4,800 acres of land outside Kingman, AZ. They immediately began to grade, and build the models along with 15 homes.

The community had plans for more than 12,000 homes, an 18-hole golf course, with more than 1,600 acres of commercial development & schools.

The project was scratched in 2008 due to the U.S Housing crash, soon after plans for a 1 Billion dollar solar plant was approved by the county.

Unfortunately, the developer never filed an application with the Arizona Corporate Commission, and the plant was never built.

MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WASTED!!!

The origins of what would become Woodward Avenue’s most distinctive and unique churches had a very modest beginning in the basement of the home of Richard Owen on Alger Street on June 25th, 1907. A meeting was held by a group of residents to address the growing number of Presbyterian families moving into the area who did not regularly attend church because the lack of one nearby. The “North Woodward Presbyterian Committee” found that they were 260 families in the area, numbering around 1,000 individuals that could be served by construction of a new church. It was resolved at this meeting to establish such a church, the plan for which was approved by the Presbytery a few months later. The first meeting of public worship of the new church was held in November in the auditorium of a nearby church, attended by 150.
